Creating a Casual Website

So, you'd like to create a website for personal use, eh? It's definitely the most simple one, and one of the most fun. Any sort of topic can be covered, and the freedoms are nearly limitless. Just keep a few things in mind, though. You'll want to avoid sounding too professional, and using a conversational tone is best--however, this does not excuse you from using proper grammar and spelling, two incredibly easy things to use that many on the Internet seem incapable of. Doing so will make you seem relaxed and happy to provide whatever your topic might be, along with seeming well educated not only in said topic, but overall in all fields. Structures of the pages needn't be strict, but it's best to follow some sort of theme, such as all pictures going to the right, text and backgrounds being the same colour throughout, and other such basic ideas that make it look like a single, well-organized website.

Now that you've gotten your website set up, you need to keep it up! Updates to your website should be frequent, accurate, and relevant to its topic. Unless it's a general-purpose blog, don't write up a page on ponies when your website is about PEZ dispensers (unless your website is about 90s sitcoms, that is!). Try to manage a regular schedule for updates, and do make sure it isn't too spaced out (unless the topic rarely ever gets anything new). It cannot be stressed enough that the entire website needs to be updated accordingly, for inconsistencies will be picked up upon by visitors. Finally, if you're going to be redoing anything site-wide, such as the layout or colour scheme, make sure to announce it beforehand, work out everything offline first, then update the entire website at the same time! This is preferably done at a time when traffic will be low (so late at night/early in the morning is best). And take feedback afterwards! If the majority of the visitors don't like it, change it back! Last thing you need is a traffic decrease due to a little design overhaul.
